Lake Como's wedding venues are almost all lakefront villas, and many are reached by boat rather than road. The most important practical detail is shade: the mountains behind the western shore cut direct sunlight up to an hour before the published sunset.

Lake Como runs between steep mountains. On the western shore — where most of the famous villas sit — those mountains are directly behind the venue, and they block the sun long before it actually sets.
In practice, a venue near Tremezzo can be in full shade by early evening while the official sunset is still an hour away. If you have scheduled your ceremony or your portraits around the published sunset time, you will be shooting in flat blue shade.
This is the single most useful thing to know when choosing between Como venues, and it is rarely in the brochure. Two fixes: pick an east-facing location such as Varenna, which holds warm light later, or pull the timeline forward by an hour.

Boat access changes everything
Several of the most sought-after villas have limited road access. Guests arrive by boat, which is genuinely spectacular and also the thing most likely to disrupt your schedule.
What to establish before booking:
- How many people can the boats carry per crossing?
- How long does a full transfer take, and how many crossings are needed?
- What happens in bad weather or high wind?
- Who is responsible for coordinating the transfer?
A hundred guests moved twenty at a time is five crossings. That is not a detail — it is potentially an hour and a half of your day, and it dictates when everything else can happen.
What Como venues have that others do not
Elevation. The villas are built on terraces stepping down to the water, which means a single property offers several distinct heights within a short walk. For photography and vertical video that is unusually valuable — you get real depth and a genuine sense of scale without travelling anywhere.
The water is the second thing. A boat arrival, or simply the lake behind you, gives context no inland venue can match.

- Is access by road, boat, or both?
- What is the seated capacity, and does that number include the terrace?
- What is the wet-weather plan, and where exactly does it happen?

Timing your content around a Como wedding
Because good light disappears early on the western shore, the couple’s content block usually has to happen before it would elsewhere. Where a Tuscan wedding can leave portraits until after the ceremony, a Como wedding often cannot.
The most reliable approach is a short block immediately after the ceremony, while the light is still direct, rather than holding out for a golden hour that the mountain will take away.
Verify before you commit
Capacity, hire terms, boat arrangements and curfews come from the venue and change year to year. Get them in writing, and ask specifically what the wet-weather plan looks like in practice — on a lake, “we move indoors” can mean a room that fits half your guests.
